For those of us that are gadget mad today marks an important day. The release of the latest version of the iPhone firmware, version 3.0. This release brings some eagerly awaited features to the iPhone; copy and pasting of text between applications, landscape keyboard for text messaging and the ability to send and receive MMS, just a few of the features this release brings to the iPhone. Check over at Apple for full details of all the new features this brings. Some of these features should probably have been available from the introduction of the iPhone. I’m talking mainly about the MMS ability which I have always felt was the one thing that let the iPhone down. Yes it’s possible to simply transmit multimedia via email to your contacts but sometimes it’s nice to just take a quick snap and send it off to one of your friends that might not have access to their emails at the moment.

Copy and paste functionality is another good addition to the iPhone, should be useful for sending people links when your surfing if nothing else. As for the ability to type landscape when sending text messages, well plenty of other applications adjust to the iPhone being rotated so it’s good that text messaging will now follow this convention.

Will the version 3.0 firmware be more of a bonus that the new iPhone 3Gs? Probably, will it bring in real drastic improvements the sales of the iPhone? Probably not. At 230mb it’s a hefty download, so I hope your bandwidth is high. Still my update’s nearly downloaded, I will let you know what I think once I’ve had a play
