The Digital Revolution took another step forward today with the announcement that the UK government wants every home in the UK to have access to broadband by 2012. With the way technology is integrated into our lives this can only be a good thing, if it comes off!
With the move towards cloud computing and the advent of technologies like BBC iPlayer faster Internet connections are becoming more and more important. After all, who would want to sit and try to watch a 30 minute program online if it takes 2 hours to download. More and more people are taking advantage of online storage solutions to have access to their files no matter where they are. Increased speed and capacity can only help these people too.
The disappointing side of the report though is that it doesn’t actually contain a strategy for how to implement. It’s really only saying that that is what the government wants to achieve, they don’t as yet know whether or not the ISP’s will be able to manage this on their own or if they will need government backing to achieve it. I know where my money lies on that one.
In a two fold announcement, the government also said it intends to look into more legislation to combat online piracy along with the creation of a digital rights agency to help the various organisations work with each other to put an end to it. For my money this could be even harder to achieve than broadband in every home. Still it pays to be ambitious
