Been a while since i posted anything on here, mainly because I’ve been rushed off my feet. Changes a foot at work have taken over my life it would seem.
Something don’t change though, I still look for tools to make my life easier. As part of my work I support a program with a database back end that can get fairly large. Sometimes larger than the size limit of most email accounts, so I have spent a lot of time looking for ways around this, ways of getting a file to my network from a clients when the file is bigger than a few Meg.
For a long while I’ve used Mai Big File as my service of choice. I like how easy it is to use. Enter an email address, then select the location of the file, click send and away it goes uploading so long as the page is left open. Once it’s done the recipient gets an email containing a link to download the file. Heck if you want can put a message in there, you can even add your own email so know when the file is up there too. Another plus, the site is free, there’s not even a need to sign up (They do have a paid version that you can brand with your company logos if you want). Just find the page, fill in the boxes and away you go.
It’s much easier than trying to talk some of our customers through using an FTP site I know that much. The only thing I have noticed with Mail Big File though, the allowed file size seems to be slowly decreasing for the free service. When I first started using it you could send a file as large as a Gig, then it was 500Mb, now its down to 100Mb. I hope that they don’t take it lower other wise some of our databases might start struggling to fit.
Just in case I am always on the look out for other services that can fill the gap. Recently I’ve found File Dropper. It’s just as easy to use as the Mail Big File service, simply select the file and click upload. But it’s missing the some of the nicer features. It doesn’t send a link to the person you want to download the file. Not a great problem as it gives you the link, but it is nice for unattended uploads. A real plus for the site though the upload limit is currently sitting at 5Gb. I don’t know about you but its not often I need to send a file above 5Gb and if I do it might be quicker to just go to site and get it myself.
Let me know if you have any other suggestions, I’m always looking for other ways of doing this.
