If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you might know that a few months back I gave into the dark side and bought myself an iMac. I’ve been playing around with, and yeah I like my Mac, I’m never gonna be one of the fanboys that rave on and on about how much better Mac OS than Windows because quite honestly I don’t think either of them are that much more oustanding than each (that’s Mac OS vs XP not vs Vista at the moment I would still take XP over Vista)
But not I’ve added to my collection. I figured after Christmas it was time to treat myself again and then working offering me a nice pay increase just sealed the deal. I have a nice laptop running Vista that is my work PC so I didn’t need to be spending loads of money on a powerhouse of a laptop. However having recently lost my mobile which held all my numbers, important notes, dates of birthdays etc, I decided I needed something to work as along side my phone.
And so as I already had things running Windows and Mac OS I figured I might as well try having something running Linux. The end result being I went and bought myself an Asus Eee running Xandros Linux. Now other than an attempt a while ago to run another Linux on my Windows box I haven’t really used Linux that much and while obviously the Xandros version has been configured to look familiar to Windows users I am quite impressed with what my little laptop can do, especially when you look at the technical specs
It might only have a 900MHz processor and 512 Mb of ram but its quick enough to boot up and shut down. The applications it comes installed with like Firefox and Open Office run well enough and give it plenty of functionality. There’s no way I could ever use it full time instead of my main laptop but it is more than capable of fitting the purpose I intended, i.e. keeping notes and details on when I am on the move.
It’s easy enough to use, heck both my nieces can operate it easily, and while they both might be able to navigate Windows to some extent at 4 and 6 they aren’t that computer literate. They seem to love the cartoonish graphics on the games and educational software included.
I only have one gripe with the Eee really and I suppose it’s just because I am picky, I’ve found that when I connect it to a wireless network it doesn’t remember that network so that the next time it sees that network it can automatically connect . Instead each time you want to connect to the same network you need to manually open the wifi connection screen, select the network, select connect and then enter the encryption key as needed. I guess if you only use the Eee at home it’s not a problem but as I move around a lot it means a lot of connection settings to remember and type in when needed.
Actually, I do have one other problem with the Eee, and thats the fact that I cant get near it any time my nieces are over because they hog it!
